An audience with... New York

Have you ever fancied being in the audience of your favourite American TV show?  Well if you’re planning a holiday to the USA it could become a reality.

Lots of popular American chat shows are recorded in studios in the New York area and offer free tickets to become a member of the studio audience. Of course some shows require you to purchase the tickets and you must be 18 or over.

Mixing with celebrities
How exciting would it be to see hosts like Tyra Banks and David Letterman in the flesh?  And what about their celebrity guests?  You might even be lucky enough to catch a live performance from an A-list band or a debut performance by an up and coming new talent.  There may even be photo opportunities with the stars - just imagine sharing and bragging about that on Facebook and Twitter?

How do you make it happen?
Free tickets can be acquired by phone, email or online usually via the shows’ website.  Some require you to fill out an online form such as The Tyra Banks Show and others such as The Oprah Winfrey Show will ask you to register through their site.  Also The Oprah Winfrey Show is recorded in Chicago.

Not all shows offer free tickets so for some you will need to purchase tickets online to become a member of the studio audience.  This can be done via online ticket sites.

How will you know if you’re the chosen one?

Unfortunately as these tickets are free there’s no guarantee that you will make the cut.  If you don’t hear anything within 2 weeks it’s likely you’ve been rejected. Other shows such as Letterman and Leno only allow you to request tickets a maximum of twice a year and you could wait six months before you know if you’ve been successful.  Well nobody said getting on TV was easy!

What’s the alternative?
There are usually a few standby tickets available for most shows on the day of recording.  If you don’t mind hanging around outside the studio and competing with other like-minded people, you may be lucky enough to get one.  However, getting a standby ticket doesn’t necessarily guarantee a seat once inside. Good luck.

When are the TV shows recorded?
If you do make the grade, most TV shows are usually recorded in the afternoon during the week.

What shows are recorded in New York?

• The Tyra Banks Show
• America’s Got Talent
• The Late Show with David Letterman
• Jerry Springer Show
• Who wants to be a Millionaire?
